It’s funny really that the girls who enjoy wearing make up are the ones who actually need it the least. I think I’ve decided to stop playing make up games for a while. I haven’t been very good about putting on a new face of make up every day and now that it’s summer, it’s even harder to come up with a reason to get fully dressed every day. It seems like the first thing I do every morning is walk outside and start sweating anyhow – why would I put on a bunch of make up so that I can just sweat it all off again? It seems like a true waste to me, at least.

In the summer months, I’m a firm believer that all we need is a bit of lip gloss. The sun and the fresh air bring a bit of color to your face and your eyes sparkle because they are well rested and there are so many fun things to do over the summer months. Recently I’ve noticed that I’m struggling with eye make up. I can’t seem to find the right colors or the right technique to make my eyes appear as big and luminous as they used to. Of coruse a lot of this is to be blamed on my age, not make up games, but still – I’d like to think that if I found the right technique for my thirties, I can look almost as good as I did in my twenties. Base is the foundation for all the rest of your make up games. When you put on your make up in the morning, you should start with a clean face and a bit of lotion. Once the lotion has absorbed, use a light coating of base to even out your skin tone. You can do this with a spray base and a sponge. Or use a damp sponge and a bit of cream base. Dot a few spots on your face and then blend it with the sponge. Use your fingers as little as possible for this stage – the damp sponge will help you get your base level even and light – fingers aren’t as good at doing that.

Outside of how you apply your base, you need to spend some time thinking about what color your base will be. Your base should be the same as your skin tone. If you tan a bit during the summer month, you might need to have a different color base for those months. All told, you might have two different bases, and sadly the best way to decide is a bit of trial and error. If you can test the products, test them on your cheek to find the base that appears to disappear. That will be the right color for you.

One of the trickiest elements in my make up games these days is my eye shadow. I’ve had the hardest time getting into make up games because I also like to wear my glasses on a regular basis. My glasses are great for my early mornings, and often my days become so rushed and frantic, it’s really just not worth it to worry about my contacts. Acne is a fierce rival. The red bumps and dots like to hang out on your face, especially if you’re a a teenager and working with some new hormone levels. I used to wear make up a lot with make up games. The make up I wore wasn’t heavy or overwhelming, it was more about looking good for myself and feeling good about myself than anything else. I haven’t had very good luck finding a moisturizer that also contains sunscreen. The moisturizers I’ve been able to find tend to sweat off easily, especially those that are tinted. I’m not sure why that is, but living in a part of the world where summers have days well over ninety and plenty of humidity, my face stays moist and often a bit clammy all day every day. When I put on moisturizer, I want a type that makes my face feel clean and fresh while also protecting it from the sun.

Getting adequate sun protection can be hard enough if you’re outside as much as I am, which is why I try to work it in with my sunscreen. It doesn’t always work, but it’s always worth a try to apply the sunscreen through the moisturizer so that I don’t forget to put on sunscreen later when I’m outside for an extended period of time and so that I have protection for the shorter periods of time that I’m outside without applying a full sunscreen application.

Now you look a bit more pulled together but can splish and splash without worry.

Personally, I hate playing make up games and having to deal with zits. When those ugly little boogers show up on my face, the last thing I want to do is irritate them more by putting make up over them and making the spot worse. Wash your face well as your first step. You don’t want any lingering oils or dirt on your face to be trapped under make-up.

If you’re dealing with the bright red variety, you’ll want to tackle that kind of spot in a different way.

Keep your make-up as light as possible as a heavy application can make your skin more agitated. Focus on your eyes and lips more than covering your face with foundation and powder.

Too often I see people wearing their mascara incorrectly. While I’m not a make-up artist and I couldn’t even pretend to be a style guide, I wonder if these people realize the effect they create by playing make up games with mascara and taking it a bit too far over the top. From too heavy an application to coverage that doesn’t make sense, there is much to learn for most of us, and like everyone, I’m most certainly a life-long make up games learner.

When you apply mascara, you should wiggle the brush a bit at the base of the eyelashes to be sure that the coverage there is sound. Then gently sweep the brush out form the eyelid to the tip of the lashes. The tips of the lashes might be invisibly pale, so seeing your lashes get longer is just part of the game.

Once you’ve applied that first coating, a light second coating can ensure good coverage, but anything more than that is too much. On the opposite end of the spectrum, applying a dark mascara to light lashes is almost always a bad idea. When applying the mascara, always start with a color just a few shades darker than your eyelashes and work from the eyelids out. If you leave a gap, your eyelashes will appear to be floating over your eye.

Tanned skin looks healthy and active, but getting a tan in a healthy way requires staying out of the sun. Spray tanning is truly the only option available for the health conscious individuals.

Fall is in the air, and with the turning of the seasons, you need to prepare your make up for the change in temperature and climate conditions. Fall make up tends to be very earthy. Moisturize heavily during these times to keep your skin in peak condition while the dry conditions try to sap the moisture away. A light cream under your make up and a heavier cream worn at night will keep your skin moist. Don’t forget to include eye creams to protect that fragile area of the face as well.

It’s almost Halloween and this is the perfect season to have a ball with face paint. If you happen to have a truly artistic friend or you’re an artist yourself, make up games with face paint will be a perfect treat. The games are simple to play – you just go wild with face paints.

Start with a basic design such as a crown or a message of some kind. Then you can get more creative by painting full face designs that will dazzle others.
